Melanie Milletics is an Internet Entrepreneur

who has been working to integrate Internet Marketing and Network Marketing since 2001 when she looked for a home based business that would enable her to raise her children without ever putting them into daycare.

Committed to a better life for her family, she began to study internet marketing and began to use online strategies to generate leads for her Network Marketing Business.  With that one change, she began to build what she calls her ‘Golden List’.  Since 2005 she has been generating lists of opportunity seekers and buyers and has mastered online relationship marketing using email, blogging, video, and of course the phone!

Melanie became an instructor

for Mike Dillard’s Better Networker, and a trainer in Ann Sieg’s Renegade Professional while being the #1 woman affiliate in the MLM niche.  She even released her own information product “MLM List Building Exposed” in 2009 and became a consultant to the industry for those who sought to have a successful online Network Marketing Business.

In July 2009 she joined ViSalus Sciences and got awards for top production every quarter as a Pioneer in the launch of the Body By Vi Challenge, and even became the company’s #2 enroller.  At the end of 2010 she stopped ‘distracting herself’ with affiliate income and discontinued mentoring anyone who was not on her ViSalus Dream Team.  Instead she focused on duplication and developing leaders – and reached the pinnacle position of Ambassador with ViSalus.

I’m actually building a Network Marketing Business.

That’s right. I’m not just a wanna be guru trainer type who calls herself an expert in teaching ‘attraction marketing’ who spends her day on Twitter and Facebook chattering away… talking up a storm about what Im an expert in.

Whoa – I haven’t even produced a good quirky video in awhile to tell you how super cool I am.

Intead, I’m actually building a Network Marketing business.

And its not a ‘shovels’ business either…  know what Im sayin? Shovels are smart- and I sell those too- but I’m working with a company that has products that have real value in the marketplace beyond the ‘home based business buyers’ market.

I’m (gasp) on the phone with prospects who have contacted me about my business. I’m qualifying them and helping those who I’d like to work with to make the decision to start their business with our rock-solid , yet incredibly progressive company.  I’m then doing Success Training for those folks – making sure they have the Foundation of the ViSalus Academy.  That training has a permanent place on my desktop. I’m thrilled to say that I help a new entrepreneur work their way through that training every day – sometimes more than one new entrepreneur a day.

I’m seeing the results of my work – watching the leaders emerge. Learning to recognize who the 30%ers, 60%ers and 100%ers are – and spending time with them accordingly.  I’m watching duplication happen, and finally leverage.  True residuals building.  Its quite awesome.

Sure, I still have a nice income from my automated affiliate income – the links I’ve weaved into my content over the years serve me well.  But I am very much aware that that is seed money – it isn’t the big picture. I don’t get paid residually on those sales… there are no leaders to develop that can produce millions.  I know where to FOCUS.

My psychological input – my energy – is not on the front end sale. Its shifted. I know the residual income dream is alive and well and I am grabbing ahold of that business model with both hands.

So forgive me if my online presence has a DIY appearance.  You can’t judge a book by its cover- you know what I mean?
If you want to align yourself with a ‘leader ‘who just met Mike Dillard or Ann Sieg a year or two ago and has themselves a nice shiny look – who has learned to say all the right things.  In other words – is a ‘wanna be’. Then go right ahead. I cant stop you.

Or… you can have actual faith that what I tell you is true.
I’ve been at this game since 2001.
I’m no wanna be. Don’t let my DIY appearance fool ya.

I can boil my message down to one line -
Learn internet marketing and communication /phone skills and you will be unusually successful.

You have an MLMer mentality? Then I’m not your guide. Go find an ‘Attraction  Marketing’ expert  with a pretty website… maybe they can help you with that.

So which are you? An MLMer, or a Professional Network Marketer?

Is there really a difference? Are we just trying to separate ourselves from the negative connotations of the phrase ‘Multi Level Marketing’ and all of the pain it brings to mind of the people who stepped into and out of the business model over the years?  Do we instead call ourselves “Network Marketers” and escape the skeptical eye of the ‘real’ entrepreneurs who would never do one of those ‘deals’?
I say not at all- Network Marketing as a profession has come into its own – and there are hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs who would never work a business if it did not have the leverage that a Network Marketing business offers.  A professional Network Marketer knows that by developing leaders – they can create true walk away income.  You cannot do that with a traditional business – even if you are the ‘boss’.

So what is an MLMer?  What makes them different from a Professional Networker? And how can YOU evolve from the MLMer mentality and become the professional you must be to stop running on the hamster wheel – getting nowhere?

The MLMer has the mentality of an employee.
Wow, thats a tough one – but right on the money. Most individuals are actually employees when they begin a home based business, so of course they have the mentality of an employee! How can that be a bad thing?
The MLMer’s focus is on retirement. Its on how quickly they can sit back and do nothing. Their first question is ‘how quickly can I make $5k a month so I can quit my job’.  Now, wanting to quit your job is a natural thing… indeed, the true entrepreneur is smothered in a job and can see no other way of life than being self employed.  But if your primary goal is retirement – we have some work to do!

The Entrepreneur’s drive is to do exactly what they desire
The entrepreneur is looking for an opportunity to work so that they can do what they are driven to do – they KNOW they are meant to do bigger and better things and are looking for the way, the teacher, the opportunity to present itself as the answer to the problem they have – a job!

The MLMer is also known as a MLM ‘Junkie’.
The MLMer is always looking for the next big thing – the next super duper comp plan that is going to pay them 2000% more for doing diddly squat. They are constantly jumping from one company to the next and have ‘shiny object’ syndrome which constantly distracts them from their goals.  They rely on their emotions when making a decision. They let the over hyped launch calls, websites and and big promises of individuals guide their decision making.  The are typically in multiple deals, and in many over many years. They never learn to laser focus to make the long term residual income… because they are living week to week, or at best month to month.

Be careful – because this affliction has a cousin. It’s the elusive search for the magic ‘system’.  If you are up all night reading every so-called guru’s training on how you can make money in your sleep without ever calling your prospects… If you are spending your days in the technical side of internet Network Marketing instead of talking to humans… you are in the endless spiral of looking for the magic dust.

7-9pm is the Golden Time where you need to be talking to people.  Your online marketing should be done after hours… yah hear???

The Professional Network Marketer aligns themselves with one GREAT company and builds for LIFE
The Entrepreneur relies on discipline – and truly does their due diligence before aligning themselves with a company that they will succeed wildly in.
(There is a reason that ViSalus has more people with multiple degrees and people who earned six & seven figures in other industries before coming to build a business here.  ViSalus holds up to their keen scrutiny!)

An entrepreneur will stick with one company once the right one is identified. They will build one huge network and create as many leaders within that network as humanly possible! They will work to ‘replace themselves’ by training up people who can lead the masses…
So that they can go on to do bigger things, to give philanthropically, to travel, to inspire greatness in others.

The MLMer is always looking for an example of success outside of themselves.
They are waiting for their upline to provide the perfect training – the perfect system, the magic leads that are going to get it all done for them… or worse still- for spillover!  What the heck is spillover? It’s a lottery mentality. It’s the get as much as you can for doing nothing – it’s the employee mentality that wants to get just enough done so that they don’t get fired… but never strives for excellence.

The Entrepreneur Leads by Example.
They make a definite decision and remained committed to the tasks ahead until the goal is met.  They don’t do what they do for the money – but for the sake of creating something bigger than themselves.  They do it in service – for the greater good. They don’t make excuses for themselves, and don’t give excuses when asked why the goal wasn’t accomplished. They state the facts… not lame excuses!

Dont Worry! Your  Evolution can be swift!

I do think that most people begin a home based business with the MLMer mentality ~  But most of us will mature into the mindset of the Professional Network Marketer. Eventually it is no longer about how much money you can make ‘off of’ people, but instead its about how many people you can help to succeed in this incredible profession. Your ability to distinguish between a ‘great’ company, and a fly by night program designed to fleece people out of their hard earned seed money becomes honed.  You will avoid money games like the plague – aware of the carnage they leave behind.  Instead, you will seek to align yourself with greatness – with a rock solid company with all of the pillars in place so that when you bring a new person into the business you know with full certainty that you are doing something GOOD. You are making a change in the world.

You never know who that new entrepreneur might be- or how many lives they will impact. But you’ll know its your job to make sure they have what they need to move forward to be a professional Network Marketer.

As a pro – you will be able to see the MLMer mentality a mile away.  You will hear it in your prospects and in your new business builders.  What are you to do???
Be an example – that’s what leadership is and does.

If they are watching, they will learn. They will emulate. They will win.   And then guess what??? So will you!

So are you an MLMer or an Entrepreneur using the Network Marketing business model? If you see yourself in the MLMer mindset – your evolution can be swift. It can be NOW. You can make the decision to avoid the MLM junkie behavior. Align yourself with a great company – and then get laser focused. Do exactly what you are told without deviation. Develop your own skill set within that company and build a rock solid future for your family.

Otherwise you are always just starting over… just trying to make a buck… just trying to get by… always thinking the reasons for your failure are outside of yourself.

If your company is not the best – then make one final jump HERE.
But if you think jumping from Visalus to another shiny object is the answer… then I KNOW your thinking is faulty! Change your mindset now- or sayonara!

One last thing…

If I tell you I’m laser focused – don’t show me your MLMer qualities by trying to woo me with your super duper next big comp plan thingy… I don’t care what it pays if you are selling crap products with no real value in the marketplace, or if your company is a dinosaur when it comes to marketing.
Really, I dont care.

I’ll respect you if you tell me you are laser focused. Sincerely I will. Respect my focus as well.

Can I really tell you all I have learned about MLM in one single post?
Highly doubtful! But I can certainly hit upon some of the highlights and can tell you about some pitfalls to avoid.

I have been working a home based Internet business since late 2000 ~ and for about the first 3 years it wasn’t a huge success. I worked with less than fantastic companies, with less than fantastic training and support and made some money because of my *lucky* nature… and skills that I developed along the way.

Because I needed to stay home with my small children, I learned how to build a business using just the Internet and the phone. I learned how to generate my own leads online, and also honed my prospecting and closing skills. Once I aligned myself with a decent company with a good payplan, I worked my way to a very sweet income.

Of course, Network Marketing, or MLM, is traditionally offline direct sales. Often called ‘relationship marketing’ or ‘word of mouth’ marketing, it is the movement of product through the distributors to their sphere of influence. With most companies you can get started for under $1000, and you have a truly unlimited income potential.

Sounds fantastic, right? Well, it should be. But there are some pitfalls to avoid, and some advice I can give you to keep in mind as you consider investing in a MLM company.

Quality Products in Demand:
First and foremost, since money is made from the sale of ‘product’, you must ask yourself if the products would be bought and sold if there was no money making opportunity available? In other words, do you feel you would be able to acquire CUSTOMERS for the products?
Are they of a superior quality, and priced at least somewhat competitively?
If you think for a minute that you are only buying them to make money, and will sell only to people that want to make money and so on… walk away.
There absolutely should be product focus, and customer acquisition should be taught and promoted within the company.
If you choose a company with excellent products, you’ll be able to make money all day long with customers. Solid, residual income from happy customers who will give you referrals all day long!

Compensation Plan:
Payplan is also incredibly important. Unless you have been around the block a few times you won’t know what makes a good payplan. The best you can do is take a look at a few similar companies and compare their compensation plan. Which is going to pay you the most money for your work?

Marketing system:
If your Network Marketing company knows something about MARKETING, you will make a whole lot more money with less work!

Do they have an online system that you can direct your prospects to? It makes no difference if your prospect came from a Chamber meeting business card exchange, an ad in the paper, or a pay per click ad on Google. They must enter their name, email and phone on a capture page and be taken to a presentation. An email series should them followup with them automatically on your behalf. Of course you will call them ASAP too-
Does the company provide the marketing system for you, or will that be an additional expense?

Professionalism:
What is the corporate culture like? Attend conference calls, local meetings, webinars, etc. Are the founders, the CEO and their top representatives on the calls behaving with professionalism? You might be surprised at how many do not. I have been on some horrible calls, and even worse meetings. Be very careful who you align yourself with!

Training:
Your sponsor will tell you ‘full training and support is provided’. Thats the nature of MLM. The sponsors do the training of those they enroll. But how is this done? Is there a systematic method to training you so that you will know exactly what you need to do to put cash in your hand that week? Or is it just ‘get some customers or enroll somebody and you’ll get paid’. Is your sponsor qualified to train you? If not, who do you have access to that IS?
The best case scenario is that corporate has a training program in place and you can plug your new people into it immediately. Thats how you can truly leverage your time. Your job then isn’t so much to train, but to develop leadership in yourself and others.

Finally… we werent born Network Marketers, but thankfully this profession has come into its own and there are many excellent, professional trainers we can and should ‘plug into’.
Always be a student, and know that each experience, whether its a win or a ‘failure’ is part of your marketers education.

Stay consistent, be persistent, and make your fortune in MLM.

The word is out! Google Adwords doesn’t allow advertising of MLM, Network Marketing schemes or Affiliate sites! The game is over, we are all doomed to using SEO to get our sites found… or are we?

Of course Google doesn’t have it out for home based entrepreneurs. They simply hate cookie cutter replicated websites! In fact, they will not allow you to advertise a replicated site, or a domain name that has been forwarded to a replicated site, even if its masked. This isn’t new news… just seems that way after many MLMers set up their new adwords campaigns after purchasing PPC Domination and found that their campaigns were being shut down by the droves.

So what is a online marketer to do? If you cant use the most effective advertising medium available online to generate hundreds of leads daily, how are you going to jump start your lead generation efforts? The answer is quite simple, yet I’ll bet 98% of the networkers reading this have not mastered this skill yet.

What is the solution?

Create your own capture pages! I do know how intimidating this sounds – it took me 3 years to even contemplate it. Once I did, I simply used my Dreamweaver software and went for it. I looked for capture pages that other successful marketers were using, created a ‘swipe file’ of phrases that I liked, and I hacked together capture pages. I purchased an autoresponder and learned how to insert the code on the page… got over the mystery of the FTP to server thing, and jumped for joy at my creations! Why? Because I was finally the one in control of my pages, and my lead lists. I did not have to pay anyone else to use their ‘system’. I was an independent business person, creating my golden list.

Folks, the Milletic’s family’s future was rewritten when Mom learned these skills. Sounds dramatic, but it absolutely is true.

“But I don’t know how.”

“I’m not good at making web pages.”

Learn. If a high school science teacher could learn to hack together websites after her children were asleep (ME) – You most certainly can.

When you have your own capture pages, you’ll have no problem running Google Adwords campaigns. You can even customize your capture pages to match your Google ad and get much higher conversions of clicks to leads. You’ll be able to do all of the things that are recommended by MLM Adwords expert Jim Yaghi.

Just get the heck out of your own way and step into your future as an internet based network marketer. It’s time your old school met the New school. You can’t be part of the Newest school if you are still paying someone else to use their system – Period.

I thought I’d provide my opinion as to why Network Marketing doesn’t work.  Let me clarify…allow my to dish my opinion on why network marketing doesn’t work for such a large percentage of those that try it.

After all…you probably never hear from people saying, “Wow!  You know…I hear network marketing is a really cool thing where tons of people make boat loads of money.”

More likely…in my 20 years of doing this, I’ve heard people say things like “No one makes money in network marketing,” or “a lot of people try and fail.”

And of course, THOSE comments ALL come from people who are NO LONGER IN network marketing.

Well…here are some interesting facts that probably no one has ever told you.

All network marketing companies are bad.
All network marketing comp plans are designed to rip you off.
All network marketing products are hard to sell.
No one makes money in network marketing.
Only those at the top make all the bucks.

In fact, every network marketing company is out to get you.

They design it so that almost everyone but a select group of “insiders” make it.

Didn’t you know that?

Of course, what I am saying above is ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT!

I am KIDDING YOU when I say that!

The TRUE REALITY is this.

Network Marketing works.
Network Marketing, while NOT for everyone, is an equal opportunity employer.

And darnit!  During the past 20 years, I have consistently made money in network marketing.  And…even more importantly, I have worked with HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS of people, if not THOUSANDS of them who consistently produce results in their network marketing businesses  But…during all of this, there are still thousands of people that come into this profession every year and then bail out as a complete failure!

So…why then is it that so many people DO fail?

The truth is…a great majority of people who come in and try network marketing DO fail.

The answer is in my opinion quite simple.  There are actually a couple of simple answers.

Here is EXACTLY why a LARGE PERCENTAGE of people that try network marketing never make it:

1.  Many people try it.  In other words, no one can ever succeed at something unless they commit to it.

2. Many people quit.  You can never succeed at something you give up at.

3. Many people never really prospect.  Sure…they’ll get in and talk to a few people, but quickly give up when they realize it takes a little bit more than they thought.

4. Many people who don’t currently have the skills don’t commit to learning them.    Network Marketing is a game of selling and promoting.  A whole lot of average folks come into this game with poor communications skills, no confidence and lack sales experience.  If you don’t know how to sell, you better learn!

That’s about it.  It’s not the comp plan, your sponsor, or the company’s fault.  When you succeed…or fail, it is your fault.  Sure, crap happens.  And when it does, you deal with it.  Successful people pull out the shovel and start scooping while failures wallow in it.  Sorry for the graphic…but so true.

Get serious about your commitment to this profession and your check will grow.
