Its time you met my friend Bob Jenkins.  Truly one of the nicest guys around, he is a master internet marketer who’s productivity astounds me.

As much as we would like them to, the reality is,
a lot of people simply will not buy from us the first
time they come across our message.

In fact, the majority of them won’t.

Even if your offer is EXACTLY what they’re
looking for, it’s actually quite rare that someone will
buy from you or sign up for your opportunity the
very first time you make contact with them.

This is just something you have to factor into the
equation when you’re hammering out your
overall sales process.

Perhaps you’ve heard this popular mlm phrase
before…

Some will, some won’t, who cares, who’s next?”

My upline in one of my former companies used to
embed this saying into our heads every chance they
got. The idea being that if someone isn’t interested,
you’re supposed to just forget about them and
move on to the next person.

Aside from the fact that we weren’t talking to the
right people in the first place, this has to be some of
the most damaging marketing advice I’ve ever fallen
victim to.

If you don’t have a systemized follow up procedure
in place for every single one of your prospects,
you’re leaving untold amounts of money on the
table.

A good autoresponder follow up sequence can EASILY quadruple
your sales because rather than just being able to sell
to the same person once, you can sell to them 5
times… 10 times… even 100 times.

The fortune truly is in the follow up.

Now here’s another popular saying you may have
heard:

“A prospect has to see your message at least 7 times
before they actually buy.”

While it certainly is true that your prospects need
repeated exposures to your offer before they will
decide to take action on it…

Merely SEEING your message isn’t enough.

Unfortunately, this “7 times rule of thumb” only
paints half the picture. Many people implement it
the wrong way.

See, when you follow up with someone, you cannot
continue to hit them up with a sales pitch every
time.

If a plain old sales pitch was enough, they would
have bought the first time. Seeing or hearing it 7
more times isn’t going to do the trick.

The reason they didn’t buy the first time around is
because they weren’t convinced that you’ll really be
able to deliver what your sales pitch promises.

You have to prove it to them.

The way this is done is by educating them and
showing them you know what you’re talking about
BEFORE they ever do business with you.

The purpose of the autoresponder follow up is to build trust and
credibility because these are some of the biggest
obstacles that hold anyone back from making a
purchase.

Every time you contact someone, each message
should sell them on the idea that their time and
money will be well spent with you not because
you asked for it, but because you gave them
valuable information for free.

This information has to be genuinely useful to them
regardless of whether or not they ever buy from you.

This is the only way autoresponder follow up becomes effective
and how you get your message in front of people,
because prospects don’t pay attention to pitches,
they pay attention to value.

When your messages become educational rather
than confrontational, all resistance melts. The
natural defenses that every person has against being
sold disappear.

So the next time you communicate with someone,
just picture their busy schedule with ten million
things on their to do list. Ask yourself if what you’re
trying to say is something they could easily dismiss
and relinquish to the junk folder… or… if it’s
something they won’t be able to ignore because it
would immediately improve their lives in some way
the moment they read it.

I know lots of people tend to obsess over the size of
their email list.

Which makes sense – I mean, more people getting your
emails has to be a good thing, right?

Problem is, not everyone who GETS your email actually
READS it. Or even opens it. In fact, the actual numbers
are that on average only 20-30% of your list is going
to open any given email they receive from you.

Ouch huh?

Not that it’s your fault or anything… they could just
be super busy at the time. Or perhaps it got lost in a
flood of emails that just happened to come in at the
same time yours did.

Or maybe they are just plain tired and will “look at it
later” (which we all know won’t happen)

So what can you do about it?

Well with a lot of the people who don’t open your
email it’s simply a matter of timing.

It’s not that they aren’t interested in what you have
to say… it’s just that it came in at the wrong time.

So how about this for an idea…

Take all the people who DIDN’T open your first email
and send them the SAME email the next day with a
different subject line.

Just a different subject line. Takes about two minutes.

Simple but powerful.

Check out these numbers from a recent promotion for the Renegade System:

First mailing: 121 sales
Second mailing (SAME email): 66 sales
Third mailing (again the same email): 47 sales

Simply by changing the subject line and resending the
same email, that’s an extra 113 sales!!

Almost DOUBLE the sales if you only emailed once!

Pretty cool, huh ;-)

In fact, it’s so cool that I wish it was my idea!

Unfortunately, I can’t take the credit for this one.

2009 is officially gone, and I could very easily simply leave it behind me. There were some major personal upheavals that happened, and in the sake of sanity… sometimes you just have to look forward, right? I mean, isn’t that what every personal development book under the sun tells you? Forgive, forget, and move on, lest your own baggage will keep you way, way down?

Sometimes, but not in the case of the story of 2009, and isn’t Melanie Milletics just incredibly LUCKY???

Ha, no way – the harder I work, the luckier I get.

First, a brief explanation of who I am, what I do, and how all the pieces of this 2009 story fit together. I’m a wife, mother, and primary bread winner in the household. Mom’s little home based business became awfully profitable after she learned a the power of List Building. I’m a Network Marketer who generates her own leads online through what people now call Web 2.0, and more recently ‘attraction marketing‘. In plain speak, I have a large subscriber base that is primarily made up of people who are either home business buyers, seekers, or simply curious. I work to entertain said subscribers by posting informative lessons on this here blog… and a good number of those people decide they like me enough to work with me in my Network Marketing company. Those that don’t may decide to buy one of the information products or services I review for them. I’m extremely careful about what I recommend to my subscribers… after all, I want them to like me and stay subscribed :) I only share those things I have personally used and found to be beneficial, or educational and of value. I’ve been building this list of subscribers since 2006 … and that list is literally GOLD. Its because of that list that much of what you see below was made possible.

So, without further ado, 2009 in video review.

The first video was actually taken in November of ‘08, but its very applicable to this story. See, its all about my getting the best home based business tax course in existence for FREE. Yep, my ‘lucky star’ was shining while I was cruising, and Sandy Botkins handed me Tax Strategies for Business Professionals, a course worth about a grand. I won it – and it really made a difference in how I tracked my business income and expenses in 2009. After all, I want to KEEP as much of the money I earn as possible.

I actually am pretty ‘lucky’. I just expect that great things will happen to me, and that life will be sweet. Most of the time I get what I expect. Imagine that…

In early 2009 I decided to expand ‘Me Inc’ and my online real estate. Since I had been building my own list since 2006, it made perfect sense to start MLM List Building Secrets. I also started to provide training webinars for my subscribers to teach them the methods I had used to become the top enroller in my company using 100% online marketing methods.

In the spring of 2009 the Renegade Network Marketer, Ann Sieg, announced the merging of the Renegade System with with Mike Klinglers Marketing Merge. She asked me to be a coach for the system and to provide exclusive training on my expertise, MLM list building. They ran a affiliate promotion to enroll Renegade Professional students, and I was the #1 affiliate for leads generated, and in the top 3 for sales.

The video is actually a thank you to my friend Mike Dillard ~ for it was his Magnetic Sponsoring course that I purchased back in 2005 that really changed my money pit of a home business into a cash cow. It’s also what helped me to become the #1 woman affiliate in the MLM niche :)

As the Renegade Professional and the launch of Mike Dillard’s Better Networker increased the number of Network Marketers who were attempting to build their business online, it became clear to me that there was alot of confusion about ‘best practices’. Since I had been studying top internet marketers since 2001, I had a very clear idea of how to best set up a home based business online. I felt an overwhelming need to tell everything I knew, and knew I could help those who were struggling to establish themselves online to get it done right the first time. In the summer of 2009 Mike Dillard announced the release of the Traffic Formula 2 course, and an incredible affiliate contest.  While traveling to Los Angeles to investigate my potential new Network Marketing home, I participated in the affiliate launch and was the only woman on the top 10 leaderboard.  Ultimately, I ended up in lucky 13th place… but hey, I was traveling!

In June I officially made my move to work with ViSalus Sciences, a Network Marketing company who’s marketing system, the Vi-Net, is actually a social networking site that directly integrates with sites like Facebook and Twitter to make Social Media Marketing easy.  In July, ViSalus launched the Nationwide Body By Vi Challenge, and I launched my own 90 Day Challenge Vlog at www.my-body-by-vi.com .

The end of 2010 was all about helping those people I had gotten started in the fall to get up to speed and making money… after all, thats how this business model works!

2009 was pretty spectacular, considering all that I set my mind to accomplish.  The bar is now raised, and the first set goals for 2010 are already on paper.  I’ll continue to grow my list and provide valuable training to those who seek to have a profitable internet based business. I’ll continue to climb the ranks in ViSalus by training others with the methods of the Fusion Academy.   I know the goals I have written will come to pass, for I am unstoppable.

“Once You Know How To Sell To 10,000
People In The Same Amount Of Time It Personally
Takes You To Sell To One Person…
You Will Never Have A “Duplication Problem” Again”

You know that feeling when you’re out having coffee with a friend… or you bump into someone you know at the grocery store… and you think to yourself, “I really need to talk to this person about my opportunity. I haven’t done anything yet to build my business today?”

And then, afterwards, when you fail to share your opportunity with them, you feel really guilty about it because you know you’re not any closer to your dreams of residual income?

How would you like to never have that feeling again?

Let’s face it.

We all hate talking to people who aren’t interested in our opportunity, and none of us would do it if we knew there was a better option available.

It’s about as enjoyable as chewing on broken glass and somehow, at a gut level it just doesn’t feel right.

So Why Do We Force Ourselves To Do It?

Well, a lot of us have been given the impression that it’s simply the only way to do this business.

Many of us have been told that the very core of network marketing, the very reason it’s so powerful, are the one-to-one relationships that allow us to immediately connect with our prospects and have our message heard above everyone else’s.

Remove the “one-on-one” aspect and you no longer have network marketing.

There are three main reasons we’re repeatedly ingrained with the idea that this form of direct selling is superior to all others:

  • *t’s more effective than other forms of advertising.
  • It’s the only way “the little guy” can compete with the big companies and build a business today.
  • It’s duplicateable.

But is all this really true?

Let’s take a look at each one of these arguments.

#1. “Direct selling is more effective than other forms of advertising.”

The average person today is busier than ever before and the amount of things competing for our attention is at an all time high.

We’re constantly bombarded with as many as 1,600 to 3,000 different ads or marketing messages every single day.

Because of this, we’re told that the only way to cut through all the noise and get people’s attention is through personal, pre-existing relationships.

An individual is actually able to get much better market penetration with their “circle of influence” than a big company with a huge advertising budget because “people buy from those they know, like and trust.”

Right?

Now, at face value, this seems to make really good sense.

But if you’ve made even the smallest attempt at expanding your business through your warm market, you know that something’s not quite right with this picture.

Were you greeted with open arms by every friend, family member, coworker, referral and
acquaintance you’ve ever tried to prospect?

Did they happily whip out their checkbook and immediately buy from you because they know you or because you’re a friend of a friend?

Probably not.

In fact, you’re probably more familiar with the experience of being avoided or shunned by people the moment they found out what your real motives for talking with them were.

So much for “cutting through all the noise” right?

So why doesn’t it all play out perfectly the way it should? Why the big disconnect between theory and reality?

It’s because…

Direct Selling, Regardless Of Whether
Or Not You Already Know Someone, Is
Still A Form Of Interruption Marketing

You’re still intruding on people’s lives with the one thing people hate almost more than anything else: An unwanted sales pitch.

Sure, you’ll be able to get your foot in the door because they know who you are… but it doesn’t matter if you’re their best friend or a total stranger, once you hit them up with a sales pitch, all of that goes out the window!

You’ve just placed yourself in the same category as all the other solicitors they ignore! It completely voids the fact that you have any kind of relationship with them.

Any trust between the two of you has been damaged because people don’t like being taken advantage of. And that’s how they feel when you assume that they’ll automatically give you their money just by virtue of the fact that you know them.

Especially if you’ve used some sneaky, bait-and-switch “I just want you to evaluate what I’m doing” or “I can’t explain it, you’ve just gotta come and see it for yourself” tactic that many uplines teach and employ.

(Deep down inside we all know this instinctively because that’s not how we would want to be treated. That’s why it just doesn’t feel right when we push our stuff on people.)

More importantly…

Any Pre-Existing Relationship You Have With
Anyone Is Completely Meaningless If They
Don’t Already Want What You’re Selling

This is the most important and fundamental rule of marketing and it’s prerequisite to everything else.

If you’re not abiding by this rule, NO form of advertising is going to work.

In fact, person-to-person is actually the worst form of advertising for practicing this sort of “interruption marketing” because with something like television or a magazine ad, your prospect can simply change channels or turn the page if they’re not interested. No big deal.

But nothing is more uncomfortable than having to turn someone down who won’t take “no” for an answer. Especially when you’re trying to be careful and polite about it because that someone is your friend.

It’s also a lot harder and more wearing on you because you personally have to deal with the rejection over and over again (another thing that we humans don’t do well with), as opposed to an ad that couldn’t care less.

While the whole point of direct selling is supposed to be to allow you to breakthrough all the other advertising clutter, there’s actually a much better and more natural way to accomplish this.

Effectively getting someone to listen to you has nothing to do with communicating at a one-to-one level.

It’s all about whether or not you’re tapping into a need or desire that already exists.

If you’re not offering them something that they’re already highly interested in, you’re not going to be able to hold their attention and you’re certainly not going to get them to take action.

The REAL KEY to getting and keeping your prospect’s undivided attention is to deliver laser-targeted messages to them at the exact moment that they’re looking for answers.

Good Marketing Is About Delivering The Right
Message, To The Right Person, At The Right Time.

This is how you stand out from the crowd and the internet allows you to do this like no other advertising medium in history because what are people doing when they go on the internet?

Searching for information!

This is the exact state of mind you need someone to be in in order for them to be receptive to your offer – not when they’re having dinner or out grocery shopping.

The very nature of the internet is that people go on it to look for answers. It’s like a giant virtual yellow pages, except infinitely better and more powerful (in ways that I’ll talk about more in future emails).

It’s THE perfect pool of prospects – warmer and more receptive than any “warm” market.

Which brings us to the next point…

#2. “One-to-one marketing is the only way “the little guy” can compete with the big companies and build a business today.”

We would all love to advertise and have business come to us if we could right?

However, we’re told that the average person just can’t afford to do normal advertising like “the big boys” can and one-to-one, word of mouth marketing is really the only option available to us small home based business owners who don’t have a lot of money to start with.

Now, 20 years ago when everything was offline this *MIGHT* have been true…

But today with the internet, this argument is simply outdated and no longer valid.

Reaching mass audiences of hundreds of thousands of people with an advertising campaign in the offline world can cost as much as a small house.

With The Internet, These Same Numbers And Results
Can Be Achieved For Nothing Or Next To Nothing

Let me give you some examples…

  • To take out a full page ad in The Washington Post, which has over 2.4 million readers, you will need to fork over a hefty $100,000.

    * A typical full page ad in most magazines will cost you anywhere from $20-40 CPM. This means ‘Cost Per Thousand’ – the cost per thousand viewers or readers. So if you want your ad to be seen by roughly 100,000 people, it may cost anywhere from
    $2-4,000.

Reach: Thousands to millions depending on the search terms you’re targeting.

Ezine Advertising
An “ezine” is an online newsletter and when you advertise with one, your offer gets emailed to the entire list of subscribers. This is one of the most effective methods for targeting huge crowds of people who are interested in your offer. There are
hundreds of home based business/network marketing ezines you can advertise with, but here are just a few examples that I found in about 10 minutes of looking through an ezine directory:
-$150 to have your ad sent to 470,000 subscribers
-$135 to have your ad sent to 280,000 subscribers
-$99 to have your ad sent to 100,000 subscribers
-$50 to have your ad sent to 37,000 subscribers
-$35 to have your ad sent to 20,000 subscribers

With the internet, anyone can advertise like the big companies, and in fact, in many cases, the “little guy” can do it a lot better.

Most Fortune 500 companies are just now starting to get up to speed on strategies and techniques that were being talked about and used with tremendous success 5-10 years ago by pioneering individuals and small home based business owners.

This may sound surprising, but did you know that during the 21st Century, 90% of the most significant breakthroughs and discoveries in science and business came from small businesses?

Why?

Because it’s very difficult for large, slow-moving, bureaucratic corporations to adapt and change.

The Fortune 500s and the Inc 500s – just like the vast majority of MLM companies – failed to adapt to the internet and are now playing catch up. (Actually, they failed to allow their
DISTRIBUTORS to adapt to the internet).

Is it really any surprise that the warm/cold market approach has become outdated?

After all, network marketing was first conceived of well over 50 years ago.

Things change. Techniques change. That’s okay.

This does NOT mean that MLM itself is outdated, just the methods that people are being taught to use. It’s more powerful now than ever, when combined with effective marketing strategies.

One more thing about this idea that home based business owners can’t advertise like the big companies can…

Notice how I said that “20 years ago when everything was offline this *MIGHT* have been
true…?”

Well, the reason I say “might” is because if you advertise like MOST distributors do, this statement is true.

You WILL lose money. Every time.

When Done Wrong, Any Kind Of Marketing
Is Expensive – Even Warm Market Prospecting
Which Is Supposed To Be Free

Most MLMers lose money because they don’t know WHAT to advertise (hint: it’s not your
opportunity).

However, when done correctly, all of your advertising expenses become a complete non-
issue.

Read that again.

WHEN DONE RIGHT…

COST IS IRRELEVANT.

Yes, even the most expensive kinds like direct mail.

On to number three…

#3. “Warm/cold market prospecting is duplicateable.”

This argument goes right along with the first one.

If we’ve already established that prospecting people who don’t care about our opportunity one at a time is NOT an effective form of marketing (and in some cases, one of the worst forms when done incorrectly), why would you want to duplicate it?

Of course the whole point is supposed to be that making a names list and calling those people is supposed to be something that absolutely ANYONE can do without needing any money, skills, or experience whatsoever (not true, by the way)…

But in reality:

Many MLMers might look at this and ask (as I would have in the past), “but didn’t John Paul Getty say that he would rather have 1% of the efforts of a hundred men than 100% of his own?”

And he did. But what he left out of that famous saying is that in order for it to apply, that 1% has to at least amount to SOMETHING.

The fact is, the old school techniques of trying to sell to unqualified prospects usually yield zero or even negative results for most MLMers and only ends up in frustration and failure.

And this is all assuming that the warm/cold market approach really is duplicateable in the first place.

But this is hardly the case.

It’s too dependent on how big your warm market is… what kind of people it consists of… and how much influence you have with them.

The problem is, most of us are not positioned very well as someone who our family and friends would see as a good person to follow into a business venture.

And in either case – whether you’re trying to recruit in your warm or cold market – when you’re prospecting people who have expressed little or no interest in your product or opportunity, only the most tenacious and pitbull-like reps can achieve any kind of consistent, ongoing success. Usually those who have had lots of experience in previous
sales positions.

Does This Mean That One-To-One
Communication Is Completely Out?

Absolutely not.

It’s simply a matter of shifting and redefining your idea of how and when to use it.

It’s just as important today as it ever has been – WHEN used correctly, with the RIGHT people at the RIGHT time.

Developing one-to-one relationships with your top business builders and your best prospects is very important…

But it’s definitely not needed for ALL your prospects. This tedious grunt work of sifting and sorting can and should be automated.

Most people find that when they do this, they literally get TEN TIMES the results.

No exaggeration. In fact that’s quite normal.

Here’s an example of just one such success story:

Over 500 Prospects Who Came To Me”

“I’m a 22 year old Bulgarian and I came to this country about two and a half years ago. I came here to go to college and I’m pretty lucky because in my first few days of coming into this country I was introduced to the network marketing industry.

I am going to hit a soft spot here, but you really need to think
about this because it is very true.

Remember when you were little and anything was possible? What did
you want to be? A doctor, a fireman, a pro athlete, a rock star, a
teacher… what was it? You remember…

I love watching my kids play because their minds have no limitations.

Thinking about this made me ask myself a while back,  “Why do so
few people have dreams these days?”
It’s because people are afraid and think, ‘Dreams cost money.’
But dreams are what make us succeed in life.
Dreams are what we all deserve to reach in our lives!

One of the more important values I have found with ViSalus(TM) is how
they stress the importance of living your dreams. The top producers
not only show off what their success has bought them, but even more
they speak of the lifestyles they have achieved and show others how
they too can have the same kind of life. ViSalus is about  great

to change who you are and how you live, begin by changing the size
of your dream.

What is it that you really want?

Why not go for it?  You really have nothing to lose!

In the following  audio Jim Rohn explains how the Law of Sowing and Reaping is so very clearly played out in growing a Network Marketing Business.  It is the thorough understanding of how it works that enables us to discipline our disappointment and keep sowing, and ultimately succeed in Network Marketing.

In Mark 4:3-8, Jesus says:
There went out a sower to sow:
And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, and some sixty, and some an hundred.

You, as a Network Marketer are the ambitious sower with excellent seed.  You have drive, determination and are ready to spread the word.   Your seed is good.  You have an excellent company, with an excellent product and you have been given just the right words to say.

But the facts are the facts, and we are told clearly how this world works in the parable above.  There are some things that are indeed, inevitable.

#1 The birds are going to get some of the seed.
You can give the invitations, and even get confirmation that some guests will attend… but then they will not show.

Oh well! Some will, some wont, so what!

Don’t chase those birds,for if you do,  you will leave the field.  You aren’t sowing if you are chasing.  Chasing will distract from your future, not add.

Its better to just accept it as it is… for you were told:  The birds will get some of your seed.

Now, if you keep on sowing, you will eventually plant enough that the birds cannot eat it all, and you will get sign ups into your business. Unfortunately…

#2 The seed falls on rocky ground where the soil was shallow. On the first hot day it withers and dies.

Those wonderful signups who seem so gung-ho? Some are going to drop just as soon as the excitement wears off.  The hot weather is gonna get some – this is not of your making.

Some don’t stay.  Attrition is real. Sure, there are things you can do to make sure your people have everything they need to stick if they are going to… but some wont no matter what you do!

You cant solve this. You can only cooperate with things the way they are…

And keep on sowing! You need to discipline your own disappointment and keep on prospecting and showing the plan.

You will sign up more people, and make more money,  as long as you continue to sow.  You will enroll more people and you will find that…

#3The seed falls on thorny ground.  The plant starts to grow again, but the thorns choke it and it dies.

Some of your new people will let cares and distractions choke their business. The unfortunate fact is that people will let little things cheat them out of big opportunities.
They wont listen to the conference calls, won’t make it to the local training events.  They’ll let ‘real life’ as they see it get in the way of their dreams.  They wont make the dream money either… and then they will choke, and fall away.

Its just the way it is…

The good news?

The sower keeps on sowing, and :)

#4 some of the seed will fall on fertile ground and will spring up and grow.

As long as you keep on sharing the story, keep on giving the invitation – finally the seed falls on good ground.

The fact is, it always will, if you keep sowing.

This is the way the world was made.

Dont try to figure out WHY, just work with it!

Now the last piece of this is that the people you enroll will work their business with differing intensities.  You cannot change them, and should not push them.

The parable says that some will work at 30%, some at 60% and some at 100%.  You can never expect a 30%er to do the work of a 100%er.  Instead, you must acknowledge and water the sprouts of the 30%ers… and keep on sowing!

A beautiful effect of your continuing to sow?  Your skill level will inevitably increase.  You have be be bad before you are good and good before you are great.  So initially, you may find that you aren’t very good at inviting… but you totally make up in numbers what you lack in skill! And the act of running the numbers will result in your getting better at prospecting and closing.

In short – get to work sowing, and don’t quit! Just understand the way the world works, and roll with it!
